MEC

Intermediate (MEC) with Integrated CA / CMA Foundation

MEC combines Intermediate studies with CA/CMA Foundation coaching, preparing students for accounting and finance careers.

Programme Overview

The MEC group (Mathematics, Economics, Commerce) is the natural launch-pad for a career in accounting and finance. In this integrated programme, students complete the regular two-year Intermediate course (Part I English, Part II Second Language, Part III Mathematics, Economics, Commerce) while receiving structured coaching for the CA Foundation or CMA Foundation examination, so that they are exam-ready by the time they finish Second Year.

Eligibility

Pass in Class 10 (SSC / CBSE / ICSE or equivalent). Students register with ICAI (for CA) or ICMAI (for CMA) at the Foundation level after Class 10; they can appear for the Foundation examination only after appearing for / passing Class 12 (Intermediate).

CA Course Structure & Examination Pattern

Stage 1 — CA Foundation

  • Entry-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It is held three times a year, in January, May/June and September.
  • Four papers of 100 marks each (total 400):
    • Paper 1: Accounting (descriptive, 3 hours)
    • Paper 2: Business Laws (descriptive, 3 hours)
    • Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude — Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics (objective, 2 hours)

  • Papers 3 and 4 are objective and carry negative marking (0.25 mark per wrong answer).
  • To pass: minimum 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate in one sitting. Verify the current passing rules at icai.org.
  • Students who later complete a commerce degree with 55% (or non-commerce with 60%) can enter CA Intermediate directly without the Foundation (Direct Entry route).

Stage 2 — CA Intermediate

    • Group I: Advanced Accounting; Corporate and Other Laws; Taxation (Income-tax Law and GST)
    • Group II: Cost and Management Accounting; Auditing and Ethics; Financial Management and Strategic Management
  • Students may attempt one group at a time or both together. Held three times a year.
  • Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) must be completed before starting articleship.

Stage 3 — Articleship (Practical Training)

  • Two years of practical training under a practising Chartered Accountant after passing both groups of CA Intermediate and completing ICITSS.
  • This is where students learn real audit, taxation and accounting work; a stipend is paid as per ICAI norms.

Stage 4 — CA Final

  • Six papers in two groups:
    • Group I: Financial Reporting; Advanced Financial Management; Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics
    • Group II: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation; Indirect Tax Laws; Integrated Business Solutions (multidisciplinary case study)
